REVIT FOR INTERIOR DESIGNERS: BIM PROJECT CASE STUDY

Hotel Suite 3D Interior Scene in Revit

Navigating massive construction projects can be a tedious job. The bigger the scale, the more information you need to keep in mind to ensure a swift and smooth project completion. Most of the issues here stem from the ineffective cooperation between different professionals.

Thankfully, a fantastic solution to these problems is building information modeling software. BIM programs, such as Revit, allow one to create intelligent architectural 3D models containing all the technical data about the buildings. The benefits of Revit for interior designers, architects, and construction professionals are countless. The most important one is that these files act as precise and informative references for the efficient construction process.

Our BIM studio has an in-house team of Revit modelers ready to take on a project of any scale. To show you what we have to offer, we prepared a case study on one of the Revit projects we completed for an interior design firm from South Africa. Let’s check it out!

#1. Revit for Interior Designers: Reasons to Outsource

Reasons to Outsource Revit for Interior Designers

Creating Revit models involves a lot of complex work with precise details. This process was taking too much of interior designers’ valuable time. Due to that, the firm couldn’t scale up and take on more projects. So, the studio’s main reason for outsourcing was to take a load off their in-house team.

However, the designers quickly discovered that there are only so many companies with skilled Revit professionals on the market. Working with freelancers has also proven unsuccessful, as it’s challenging to make individual specialists work as a team efficiently.

Thankfully, the designers came across our professional drafting studio, whose services are the perfect solution to their issues. Our staff comprises more than 12 qualified Revit professionals ready to take on any complex drafting or modeling task. Besides, a project manager is assigned to the team, supervising their work.

Wondering what our workflow looks like? Let’s explore what went into our client’s BIM project in more detail.

#2. Scope of Work for the BIM Project

Scope of Work for an Interior Design Revit Project

At first, the interior designers received a Revit file from the architects with the initial draftings for a stunning architectural project in UAE. It included the planning for three restaurants and five hotel suites. The client sent this file over to us, as well as a comprehensive brief with comments and desired finishes for the interior.

Our task was to modify the original file by adding specifications, legends, and keynotes, as well as create the following plans for each of the rooms:

  • wall and floor finishes layout with material descriptions and dimensions;
  • electrical layout — a diagram of electrical circuits, sockets, and wiring;
  • low level lighting plan with positions of light sources at or near floor level;
  • reflected ceiling plan (RCP), containing information about light sources on the ceiling;
  • elevations, which visually represent a layout of an interior on a vertical plane;
  • detailed technical drawings of the furniture.

Formalizing the file for the entire architectural project took three weeks of our drafters’ work. Let’s see how it turned out with one of the interiors as an example!

#3. Revit for Interior Designers: Project Results

Here are the draftings of the living room/kitchen interior we made for one of the hotel suites. Below, you can see the general floor plan, interior 3D views, wall and floor finishes layout, and elevations.

Now, let’s check out the electrical diagram, reflected ceiling plan, and low level lighting layout.

And finally, have a look at the detailed furniture drawings for the kitchen appliances and TV shelving.

The designers were delighted with the results and our smooth workflow. Our team looks forward to collaborating on more of their Revit modeling tasks!

As you can see, there are a number of beneficial features of Revit for interior designers. Yet, it’s a laborious technical process, which may prevent them from taking on more projects. Outsourcing to a professional BIM company is the answer! The team of professionals will gladly create or modify the Revit files if you provide all the necessary details and references.
