From Drawing to Machine: CAD, CAM and What Gets Automated
Most of what gets written about the advantages of CAD comes out of manufacturing, and there is a reason for that. In a factory the model goes to CAM, CAM writes the toolpath, and a CNC machine cuts the part with nobody redrawing anything in between. That unbroken chain is where the productivity figures people quote actually come from.
Building work does not look like that. Nobody mills a wall. What architecture and millwork get instead is consistency and speed on paperwork: one detail repeated across forty sheets, a schedule that updates itself when a fixture changes, the same set exported three ways for three trades. The only place our own work touches CNC is at the shop drawing end, when a cabinet run goes off to a nested panel saw.
And the Disadvantages, Since Nobody Lists Those
CAD costs money before it saves any. A commercial licence arrives as an annual bill. The machine that runs it without complaining is not the cheap one either.
